The John Davies Oval in Queenstown will play host to two double-headers this Christmas break, as the Otago Volts & SBS Bank Otago Sparks take on Wellington on the 28th, and Auckland on the 29th of December.

The 28th of December will represent the first ever time that the SBS Bank Otago Sparks have played Domestic Twenty20 Cricket in Queenstown!

Queenstown local, Bella James, begun her cricketing journey at Queenstown CC after being encouraged to play by current Otago Sparks manager, Emma Campbell.

For James, the double-header will be an experience to remember.

“We are lucky to have so many awesome home venues around Otago, but to play a game in my hometown in front of friends & family will be extra special,” said James.

“I’ve got a bunch of family who will have organised to be there on the day, so I’m hoping the Sparks can put together some good performances for them!”

The Otago Volts last played Twenty20 Cricket in Queenstown in December 2013. Current Otago Volts Neil Broom, Jacob Duffy, & Hamish Rutherford were all part of that team, sneaking a 13-run win against the Auckland Aces.

For Otago Volts captain, Hamish Rutherford, the opportunity to play two of NZ’s premier Twenty20 sides, including the defending champions, is a challenge the Volts are eager for.

“Wellington have been a successful side over the last few seasons, who have a nice mix of experience and youth to add some flare,” said Rutherford.

“We’ve been playing some really good cricket, and I know the group are excited to get to Queenstown over the holiday period and take on the challenge that Wellington and Auckland will bring.”
