Dunedin to host three key matches for ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022

Dunedin will host reigning world champions, England, as well as South Africa and home favourites, the WHITE FERNS, within the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 line-up of three Dunedin matches.

The tournament will welcome eight competing teams to New Zealand from 4 March 2022, for a series of 31 one-day international matches. The three matches to be held in Dunedin are:

  • Saturday 5 March – Qualifier v South Africa
  • Monday 7 March – New Zealand v Qualifier
  • Wednesday 9 March – Qualifier v England

Mayor of Dunedin Aaron Hawkins says, “We’re looking forward to hosting this high calibre line-up of international cricket matches, including our very own WHITE FERNS. As ever, Dunedin will provide a warm welcome and an excellent host city experience.

“It’s great to have major international sporting events on the horizon once again, as they not only add to city vibrancy but provide direct economic benefit to local businesses, as teams and fans spend on activities, dining and shopping.”

ICC CEO, Manu Sawhney says, “The ICC has made a long-term commitment to elevating women’s cricket as part of our strategy to grow and develop the global game.

“We want to build a sustainable foundation for women’s cricket. It is about building a product that fans want to watch, that kids want to take up, that sponsors and broadcasters want to be part of. This schedule takes the world’s best cricketers across New Zealand and can help inspire a generation of girls and boys to take up the game.

“We are extremely proud of the significant progress we have made in increasing prize money for ICC events over the last few years, with the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 in New Zealand having $NZD5.5 million dollars available in prize money, an increase of almost 60% on 2017 and more than 1000% compared to 2013.”
