Martin Appointed as Otago Cricket GM Performance

Otago Cricket's new GM Performance, Steve Martin.

Otago Cricket is excited to announce the appointment of Steve Martin, as its General Manager, Performance.  Martin brings considerable experience to the role having served as General Manager for the Southern Zone, NZ Rugby League for the past 12 years.

Prior to that overseeing a range of management and performance roles with the Otago Rugby Football Union, including Director of Rugby and Rugby Manager, over nearly eighteen years (18), which included a three-year stint as NPC Otago Head Coach and Highlanders Assistant Coach.

CEO Mike Coggan is excited about the qualities that Martin brings to the role.

“Having carefully reviewed our strategic needs across our performance environment and employed very capable coaching staff last winter, we believe we have now attracted the perfect leader in Steve, to drive our performance goals and support our pathway and performance athletes, and coaching staff to reach their potential.” said Coggan.

Closely aligned with NZC high performance department, the GM Performance leads people and strategy and will create an environment that delivers sustainable performance outcomes including the development of talent for Otago and New Zealand.

Coggan points out that this is a leadership role and not a coaching role.

“This is an influential role focused on getting the best out of people, to assist them to reach their potential,” said Coggan.

“Steve’s empathetic leadership approach, his learning-based focus and extensive experience leading high performing sporting environments will hugely benefit our performance programme”.

Martin is buzzing about the challenge that lies ahead.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Otago Cricket in this exciting role. This is a unique opportunity for me to bring my leadership skills to an organisation, and a great bunch of people, who are committed to working hard to achieve success on and off the cricket field in Otago.”

Marty Croy, Head of HP Domestic Partnerships NZC, reiterated the importance of the role in creating and maintaining an effective performance environment.

“The GM Performance role is critical to NZC’s high performance strategy, which emphasises the need for NZC’s six domestic associations to have quality development and performance environments in place across both men’s and women’s pathways.

Steve’s appointment, and the skill set he brings to the role, will add immense value both to the Otago and NZC high performance landscape”.

The GM Performance appointment panel included NZC High Performance staff Marty Croy and Pete Sanford, OCA Board Director Nathan McCullum, CEO Mike Coggan, Jacob Duffy (Otago Volts) and Polly Inglis (Otago Sparks).

Martin will commence his new role on Monday 20 June 2022.
