SBS Bank Otago Sparks spinner Sophie Oldershaw has announced her retirement from professional cricket.
Oldershaw debuted for the Sparks against Auckland in 2017 and throughout her career, she made 89 appearances for Otago, including 44 List A games and 45 T20 games.
In List A, Oldershaw took 35 wickets at an economy rate of 5.25, with her best bowling figures being 5-19. Additionally, in T20 matches, she claimed 36 wickets at an economy rate of 6.34, with her best bowling performance being 3-16.
Known for her unique right-arm googlies, Sophie excelled particularly in the challenging Super Smash format, often delivering crucial overs during the death stages of matches. Her remarkable dedication to the sport, despite balancing a full-time career alongside cricket, exemplifies her unwavering commitment to the Sparks.
Sparks Head Coach Craig Cumming reflects on Sophie's retirement with a mixture of emotions.
“It is mixed emotions having Sophie retire from the Sparks. We are all very excited for Sophie as she heads into the next exciting chapter of her life but also sad that we are losing a highly valued and respected member from the Sparks on and off the field” Cumming said.
“The Sparks environment is very special and that is because good people come first, and Sophie has always been a leader in this area. I know the Sparks will give Sophie the deserved goodbye in the coming weeks and celebrate with her a wonderful career” Cumming added.
Oldershaw reflected on a memorable seven-year career with the Sparks.
"I have enjoyed every moment of playing for the Sparks and representing Otago the past few years. Thank you to my teammates, coaches, and support staff who have been instrumental in my development as a cricketer and as an individual” Oldershaw said.
“I can't think of a better team to have gone through this experience with and I look forward to watching and cheering on the Sparks from the banks next season " Oldershaw added.
On behalf of Otago Cricket, we would like to wish Sophie all the best in her next chapter of life.
