The Otago Volts have completed a successful week in Colombo. The team has been in Sri Lanka for eight days preparing for the Champions League in India. The Volts played a series of four games against a Sri Lankan selection and finished the week unbeaten.
In today’s final game at the Colts ground the Volts made 147-7 from their twenty overs. Neil Broom top scored with 52, his second half century of the week. The Volts got off to a fast start and were 73-2 in the ninth over when Brendon McCullum was run out attempting a tight second.
The Sri Lankan selection fought back through tight bowling, the ensuring pressure creating regular wickets. When first Neesham and then de Boorder went with the score at 130 and 138 respectively the home side had got right back into the contest.
McCullum, Bracewell and Wagner all attempted to finish the innings with a flurry but the accurate bowling continued and the Volts had to settle for 147.
McMillan had the wicket of Rizvi when the score was 12, Wagner then had Karunanayake and Rajakaruna caught by de Boorder with the score at 19 and 35. When Beard removed Asanka three runs later the contest was effectively over.
Andy Solaman provided some resistance but the result was never in doubt and the locals eventually finished at 106-8, a 41 run win completing the Volts unbeaten week.
The team leaves Sri Lanka tonight and arrives in Mohali tomorrow morning local time.
