Playing Report

The Otago U15 team had a reasonably successful tournament and were able develop over the period they were together. After a very good result against the Otago U17 Development team the side travelled to Christchurch with a good deal of confidence.

The start of the two day game was delayed on the first morning because the covers had a leak overnight leaving wet patches on the pitch at one end. Otago lost the toss and batted first only scoring 104 in the first innings. Gregor Croudis top scored with 25 and Jonty Brown made 16. The team lost wickets consistently and other than a 40 run opening stand were unable to form any lasting partnerships.

Otago then bowled Canterbury out for 124 after having them 38 for 6. The opening bowlers bowled with good pace but the best bowling came form the two medium pacers Caleb Mitchell and Quentin Gare. They both bowled accurately and were able to swing the ball. Gregor Croudis also bowled some useful leg spin.

In their second turn at bat Otago made 147 built around Jonty Brown’s 46 and Tim O’Malley’s 39. Once again the middle and lower were able to contribute a great deal. This left Canterbury to chase 128 for the outright victory. Canterbury were able to reach the total in the last over of the day 5 wickets down.

The one day game looked to be the Otago players preferred format as they batted first and were able to 214 all out in the final over. The backbone of the innings was a fine 85 from Ben Willemsen. The innings started well with a 55 opening wicket partnership from Gregor Croudis and Jonty Brown. The Otago batsman looked much more assured at the crease and batted with a great deal more positivity.

In reply Canterbury were all out in the 46th over for 180. All the Otago bowlers bowled with accuracy and Gregor Croudis picked up 3 wickets and Quentin Gare 2.

Ben Willemsen and Jonty Brown topped the batting averages with 30 and 28 respectively. Quentin Gare and Caleb Mitchell bowled with a great deal of control and topped the bowling averages.
